Throughout my life, music has been an essential means of self expression. I played piano and flute as a child, and discovered a love of singing early on, performing in school choirs and shows. When I was 18, I picked up the guitar. I found myself drawn to songwriting soon after, and started singing and performing my songs around the city. I am currently a vocalist, still writing and composing my own music.
Having also developed a passion for teaching over the years, I pursued and completed my MA in Music Education at Hunter College. Throughout the program, I was pregnant, became a new mom, and got pregnant again. I student-taught and observed in multiple classrooms, from elementary to high school. Toward the end of the program, while in my 3rd trimester of pregnancy, I taught in an inclusive, bilingual (Spanish/English) elementary school. There I witnessed the benefits of music education on all children, regardless of their abilities or challenges. I completed my degree 2 weeks before giving birth to my youngest son, who was born with an extremely rare disorder resulting in global developmental delays and medical complexities. From the moment he was born it was clear that music would be instrumental in his development. Music excites and motivates him at certain times, and soothes him instantly at other times. I have used music in a variety of contexts, from day to day activities to his therapies to his hospital visits. Music is in all we do, and I don’t know what we would do without it. Over the years, my appreciation for the power of music has continued to deepen, along with my passion to share that power with others.
I believe in meeting each child where they are, and approach education from an asset perspective, with an awareness of children’s strengths, interests, and unique ways of expressing themselves. It is in that spirit that I offer individual and group music classes. Kids have the opportunity to play percussion instruments, ukulele, and guitar, as well as sing and move to songs ranging from classic children’s tunes to folk, jazz, and rock.
